Introduced around 1896, this beloved heirloom produces striking, airy umbels up to 12 inches across, filled with as many as 100 mallow-purple florets. The blooms are carried on creamy-mauve stems that rise from a strong, upright stalk. When first emerging from its papery sheath, the bud resembles a thick green paintbrush. As the floret stems extend, they create a starburst effect, with tiny flowers perched on stems of varying lengths from ½ inch to over 8 inches, giving the plant its signature “fireworks” look. Even after blooming, the display continues-long-lasting seed pods form, keeping the plant’s sculptural, firework-like appearance in the garden.
