‘April Tryst’ has unusually good winter hardiness. It is part of the April Series (cultivars developed for improved winter hardiness), and is now one of the few cultivars of C. japonica currently recommended for growing outdoors year round in USDA Zone 6 (some say 6b). It is likely to survive winter outdoors in the St. Louis area with bloom occurring in April as suggested by the cultivar name.

‘April Tryst’ is a Japanese camellia in the April Series introduced by Dr. Clifford Parks. It is temperature rated to USDA Zone 6, but is best sited in areas where winter temperatures are unlikely to dip below zero degrees F. This is an evergreen shrub that typically grows over time to 5-8’ tall and to 4’ wide with elliptic to obovate, serrate, glossy dark green leaves (to 3” long). Fragrant, red, anemone-form flowers (each to 3-4” diameter) bloom outdoors in spring (April), thus giving rise to the name April Series. ‘April Tryst’ is a seedling of Camellia japonica ‘Yours Truly’.
