The Blackgum tree (Nyssa sylvatica), also known as the Black Tupelo, is a deciduous tree renowned for its stunning fall color and adaptability to various environments. Reaching a mature height of 30 to 50 feet with a spread of 20 to 30 feet, the Blackgum has a pyramidal shape when young, maturing into an irregular oval form. Its dark green, glossy leaves turn a spectacular array of bright red, orange, and yellow in the fall, making it one of the most vibrant trees of the season. The tree produces small, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers in spring, which give way to small, blue-black fruit enjoyed by birds and wildlife. Preferring moist, well-drained soils, the Blackgum is tolerant of a range of conditions, from full sun to partial shade. Its strong wood and resilience make it a low-maintenance choice, perfect for adding beauty and ecological value to landscapes.
