Red Mulberry (Morus rubra) is a deciduous tree that is native to the eastern United States. It can grow up to 50 feet tall and has a dense, spreading crown and a short trunk that is about 2 feet in diameter. The leaves of the Red Mulberry are dark green and turn a golden yellow in the fall. The female tree produces deep purple fruits that are sweet and enjoyed by wildlife, but can be quite messy. The Red Mulberry is often found in the rich, red soils of lower and middle parts of the state, but it is found in all regions of North Carolina.
