Spider milkweed is a herbaceous perennial plant native to glades and prairies in the United States and Mexico. It is one of the earliest spring-blooming milkweeds, with large yellow and green flowers and purple centers. The plant grows up to 24 inches tall and spreads up to 24 inches wide. It prefers dry soil and full sun, and is deer-resistant. Spider milkweed is a high-value butterfly nectar source and a host plant for monarch caterpillars. The mature seed pods of spider milkweed curve upward, approximating the form of an antelope horn, hence the common name for this species. The stem is green tinged with maroon, and the leaves are long and fold upward from the central vein in a V.
