Spicebush is a deciduous shrub that is native to the Midwest and eastern North America. It is known for its spicy and fragrant leaves and stems. The shrub is typically found in moist woodlands, rich forests, dry forests on slopes, and swamps. It can grow up to 15 feet tall and has a broad, rounded habit. The leaves are alternate with a smooth margin and produce a spicy odor when crushed. The bark is brown to gray-brown and speckled with light-colored lenticels. Bright red fruits ripen from July through October on female plants, but are only showy once the foliage falls off 123.
