Arkansas blue star, also known as Amsonia hubrichtii, is a perennial plant that grows up to 3 feet tall and wide. It is native to the Ouachita Mountains in central Arkansas and Oklahoma. The plant has a bushy clump of stems that are densely covered with soft, narrow, needle-like leaves, giving it a ferny appearance. The light green leaves are alternate, 1/16 wide and 3 inches long, and turn a bright yellow-gold in the fall. Arkansas blue star is found in open fields and dry rocky outcrops in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. It is a slow grower and may take 1 to 2 years before its true beauty can be seen. The plant produces clusters of small, light blue, star-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer. It is a low-maintenance plant that attracts butterflies and birds.
