Red buckeye, also known as Aesculus pavia, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that grows up to 15 feet tall and is native to North America. It blooms in spring with showy, erect, 4-10” long panicles of red to orange-red, narrow-tubular flowers. The leaves are palmately compound, shiny, dark green, and attractive in spring and early summer, but usually begin to decline by August. The smooth, light brown, globular seed capsules encase 1-3 shiny seeds called buckeyes that ripen in the fall. Red buckeye is planted for the showy, red spring flowers and is best used as a specimen or in shrub borders.
