Carolina allspice is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 6-9 feet tall and has a spread equal to or slightly greater than its height. It has strap-like, maroon to reddish-brown flowers that bloom at the ends of short branchlets in May. The flowers have a sweet banana-strawberry fragrance. The fruit is persistent into winter as an urn-shaped brown seed pod. The plant is non-invasive and is found in the southeastern United States region. It is also known as eastern sweetshrub or spicebush.
