A Himalayan native evergreen fern that can be found growing in moist valleys at five to seven thousand feet elevation in Tibet to central China, Dryopteris pulcherrima, commonly known as the Beautiful Wood Fern, is, as the name suggests, a beautiful fern. What's surprising is how well it has grown in the heat in southern US gardens as far south as zone 9a, and is cold hardy to zone 5a. Its lacy, upright fronds form an 18 inch tall by 2 foot wide evergreen clump that is excellent as an accent or in groupings in partially shaded to shady woodland gardens. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil that is rich with organic matter. As with many other hardy ferns, the deer and rabbits turn their noses up to the Beautiful Wood Fern.
